Tucked away 35 km. (27
miles) North of Whistler, on a better part
of Highway 99, is the beautiful Lillooet
River Valley. The Valley is a trough gouged
out by glaciers, and originating in a vast
glacier itself the Lillooet River meanders
along the flat valley floor for miles,
swinging freely from side to side past the
charming little farming community of
Pemberton. With a resident population of
about 1200 people, Pemberton is a
comparatively small town with a big heart!
Being in a geologically young area, the
Valley enjoys the stunning beauty and
variations of nature in its unspoilt form.
Every flower that blooms, every bird that
sings, every hot spring that flows and every
mature tree that has seen history unfold on
its doorstep has a story to tell.
The volcanic shifts, the Gold Rush trail,
the potato fields, the quaint ranches and,
of course, the two beautiful Golf courses
all speak volumes about this little village.
Most activities that are advertised in big
towns and resorts actually come to
culmination around the Pemberton area.
Rivers and streams, most of them
glacier-fed, have strongly influenced the
lives of all who call this Valley their
home. As in the past, they continue to
provide excellent fishing, transport routes,
challenging rapids or simply delight those
who seek solitude through sitting on their
banks and meadows watching the geese fly by.
As with any farming or ranch country, horse
riding has been a way of life. It is not
surprising to find a couple of horses
tethered on a hitching post outside a
general store. Though, with pristine tracks
and spectacular backcountry trails just
waiting to be explored, snow shoeing,
cross-country skiing and snowmobiling also
seems to be becoming equally popular over
our snow-white winters. Being at 760 ft.
altitude and protectively surrounded by
mountains as high as 8662 ft., Pemberton
does not normally experience harsh weather
systems.
